South East Field Days

The Lions Club of Lucindale along with the whole community rally their resources, talents and manpower for two days a year to host this major event which brings approximately 25,000 visitors to the township.

From very humble beginnings as a minor agricultural display twenty four years ago the Field Days have flourished, catering for over 500 exhibitors in 2002 on just over 600 sites.

The Field Days are a combination of agricultural, environmental, educational, technological and general interest displays, providing visitors with an opportunity to view a wide range of static exhibits and the latest innovations in a friendly relaxed atmosphere.
We have exhibitors coming from every state in Australia, with the exception of the Northern Territory. With so many visitors, accommodation is at a premium bringing benefits to the whole region.
The community input and effort required to run the Field Days provides an opportunity for almost every district resident to contribute through different groups and clubs. These groups benefit by the many hours worked. The Lions Club uses funds raised at the Field Days to generously support Lions and Community based projects.

Site improvements continue every year when funds become available. Watering and mowing continues throughout the summer to present the grounds in the best possible way for the exhibitors to display their products. There is an all weather airstrip adjacent to the Field Day site for visitors to fly in. The local ambulance service and the Police always present for the two days. There are new toilet blocks with disabled facilities and two well positioned disabled car parks.

We now offer to patrons an air-conditioned courtesy bus to take them around the site. A courier service is provided to transport large purchases to car park gates and the children's activities areas are well patronized.

There are several catering areas with tables, chairs and bales of hay for patrons to rest in the shade.

A wide selection of reasnably priced food is available.

The popular Scarecrow & Outback Mailbox Competition (all entries to be constructed from recycled materials) and the AusIndustry New Inventors are on the program again.

Over the years we have gradually built up our Sponsors. Their generous support helps to contribute to the successful running of the Field Days.

Lucindale Speed Shears

Now in its 17th year, the Lucindale Shears is the largest sheep shearing competition in South Australia, and in the Top 10 Australia wide.

It is held on the second Saturday of each November.

Shearing is in full swing at this time of year and sheep all over the Limestone Coast are being fleeced of their dignity as wool is harvested at shearing sheds across the South East.

The Lucindale Shears will give an insight into the working environment of a "true to life" shearing team.

There are competitions for all class/grades of shearer's, from Novices, Intermediate, Senior and Open, through to World Championship status.
Shearer's are judged on their speed and also the quality of their job. Wool is a valuable fibre and the wool grower is out for maximum returns. It takes 12 months for a sheep to produce optimum wool and quality shearer's are always in demand to remove the fleece, ready for processing into fabric and yarn.
Sheep are also highly valuable and those that are well presented attract maximum competition at Livestock Sales.

Shearing will commence at 8.30am & continue throughout the day.
A Teams Event will really put the shearer's and rouseabouts under pressure as they compete against each other as if in the shearing shed. The sheep will be shorn and the wool is prepared ready to be sold.

Speed Shear Heats will be held late afternoon, then shearer's will shear one sheep in the fastest possible time. They may do a whole sheep in 30 seconds or less!!

The Shearing and Speed Shear "Finals" will be commence in the afternoon and continue into the early evening.

The Lucindale Shears is part of a Statewide Competition circuit, encompassing 8 shearing and woolhandling competitions.
